The MOTION (Mobility for Strengthening Innovations in Energy and Transport through the Integration of Information Technology and Social Aspects to Foster Climate Change Mitigation) project is an innovative and visionary initiative by African universities to foster collaboration and advance sustainable energy and transport solutions across the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) region. By bringing together Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), industrial partners and business community, the MOTION project aims to cultivate a skilled and market-ready workforce capable of driving innovations and sustainable development in the energy and transport sectors, thus contributing towards realization of sustainable development Goals (SDGs) and support GGIs.

Objectives of the Project:

  1. Promoting inclusive learning mobility opportunities in HEIs in these areas by focusing on training and multidisciplinary research in Physics (energy option), civil engineering, and IT with the aim of developing a skilled and market ready workforce that is capable of responding to the needs of the region.
  2. Promoting entrepreneurship and drive skills transfer in the green energy and transport sectors and align with climate change mitigation efforts through imparting social skills capacity among the students and trainees for ensuring technologies and innovations are suitable and accepted by society.
  3. Creation of  awareness on climate change mitigation and adaptation measures through dissemination of research output, conducting community outreach and providing policy briefs to influence attitude, policy, consumption  in the broad area of climate and environment

The project will facilitate mobility of 59 participants of which 32 will be masters students (54%), 7 doctorate students (12%), 12 trainees (20%) and 8 staff (14%) with one additional slot dedicated to persons with special needs. The total distribution of females will be masters = (11) 34%, doctorate = (3) 43%, Trainees = (4)33% and staff at (3) 38% of the total mobility. The mobility is geared towards building capacity in the broad areas of climate change mitigation, energy and transport in SSA. This will be achieved through collaboration in teaching, training and research amongst the participating HEIs in the consortium. In particular, the consortium will consist of four (4) universities, namely:

  1. Moi University (MU) – Kenya,
  2. University of Mines and Technology (UMaT)- Ghana,
  3. Ecole Polytechnique d’Abomey-Calavi (EPAC)-Benin,
  4. CopperBelt University (CBU) – Zambia
  5. University of ORLEANS (ORLN)-France as the Technical partner.

Through the partnership, the projects will enhance access to quality education and advance climate mitigation and resilience.

Stipend

The project funds allocated for scholarship contribution of mobility will be calculated on the basis of the monthly unit costs (pro-rata of the actual number of days).

  • Master student: EUR     890/month × duration in months of the mobility
  • Doctoral student: EUR 1, 230/month × duration in months of the mobility
  • Trainee: EUR 1, 230/month × duration in months of the mobility
  • Staff: EUR 2, 370/month × duration in months of the mobility

This monthly scholarship payments shall cover travel costs (return air ticket) from home country to host institution, including travel insurance and Visa , installation, accommodation and subsistence costs for the participant. The host partner institutions shall be responsible for paying to the scholarship holders the monthly allowances in line with the unit cost amounts as defined in the Call for Proposals guidelines.

Insurance costs

The insurance coverage should be in line with the minimum insurance requirements (Article 18 of the Grant Agreement). The scheme must take effect from when the scholarship holders start their journey to participate in the mobility and until at least one month after the end of the mobility related activities (e.g. end of the course/research/placement/assignment, unless the scholarship holder leaves earlier).
